MINI – CONFERENCE ON AGROECOLOGICAL CROP PROTECTION (ACP): THE CASE OF FALL ARMYWORM (Spodoptera frugiperda) AND FRUIT FLIES

In recent years, the Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugierda) emerges and becomes the most important invasive pest not only in Viet Nam but also in many countries on the world (see the picture below).

Today, Plant Protection Research Institute (PPRI) has an opportunity to host a scientific exchange (a mini-conference) with participating scientists from many countries and scientific organizations such as Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VAAS), CIRAD, Vietnam National University of Agriculture, Plant Protection Department (PPD), CIRAD + ASEA (Agroecology in Southeast Asia) and some entomologists and scientists from PPRI and more 20 scientists, organizations that attended online. There were 6 presentations in total,among them 3 about FAW, the situation of FAW in Viet Nam and the use of Pheromones for FAW trapping then followed by a presentation of Pierre Silvie (CIRAD) about the study of FAW and partnerships all around the world. The second part of the conference was the session of biological control of fruit fly with 3 presentations on Sterilized Insect Technology (SIT) for fruit fly management in Viet Nam;Biocontrol for key insect pest management in Viet Nam and Agroecological management of fruit flies. Many questions were asked and answered during the fruitful discussion, which means these two insects are very interested and important. The conference was finished by a visit of PPRI research on FAW, SIT, and biocontrol.
